Carlisle United play-off hero Ben Barclay has today left Stockport County.

The defender has agreed terms at Edgeley Park to cancel his contract.

The news is likely to raise speculation that Barclay could return to Brunton Park this summer.

The 26-year-old was on loan at Carlisle last term and memorably scored the winning goal in their play-off semi-final second leg against Bradford City.

He was unable to feature in the final against parent club Stockport but celebrated promotion with his Blues team-mates after last month's penalty shoot-out win at Wembley.

Barclay is now on the free agent market, the former Brighton & Hove Albion and Accrington Stanley man having previously been under contract at Stockport until the summer of 2024.

"The club can confirm that it has agreed terms with Ben Barclay to cancel his contract, with the defender now leaving Edgeley Park," Stockport said in a statement.

"We’d like to thank Ben for his efforts during his time at Edgeley Park, and wish him well for the future."

Barclay made 17 appearances for the Blues last season, also scoring the winner in their League Two win at Barrow in April.

United are in the market for defensive reinforcements following captain Morgan Feeney's decision to leave the Blues and sign for Shrewsbury Town.
