Mark Johnston, who holds the title of the most successful trainer in British racing history, was recently honoured in Carlisle more than 36 years on from his first-ever win there in 1987.
The Mark Johnston 1987 Hinari Video Handicap was run in recognition of the trainer's debut victory at the Cumbrian track on July 1st, 1987.
Following Hinari Video's victory, Johnston went on to become the winning most trainer in British racing history when his 4194th winner crossed the line five years ago, and he now has more than 5000 wins to his name.
The idea for the race was put forward by former Raceform and Press Association racing reporter Will Lefebve, and he needs help from any racing aficionados in the area.
Mr Lefebve was in attendance for Johnston's first winner nearly four decades ago but has thus far been unable to locate the name of the commentator who covered the race.
The journalist is keen to write a 'where are they now' style article and has already tracked down the other trainers and jockeys who were involved that day, but the commentator's name continues to elude him.
Unfortunately, the racecourse's archives only go back to 1994, so they weren't able to provide a copy of the racecard.
Mr. Lefebve is hoping that any collectors of racing memorabilia in Cumbria would have access to the racecard from 1987 and suggests that he would be able to sort a free day at the Carlisle race track in return for such a favour.
Anyone with any further information or knowledge about the commentator on that historic day should contact the News and Star.
