We are all probably guilty of seeing every football move in financial terms, even if that’s a forgivable guilt, particularly when thinking of what certain amounts, over certain periods, could do for the health of a club like Carlisle United.
All the same. We should never go too far away from the personal side of stories, particularly when they should fill us with a purer satisfaction, over and above thoughts about sell-on fees and whatnot.
So let’s get down to what really matters when it comes to the two goalkeepers from this county on the move this summer.
These are ringing triumphs for Cumbrian football, matters for the utmost celebration when you consider the steps in their development, the family support they’ve had and, most of all, the way the players have propeller themselves.
Any aspiring player from our county needs to look no further than James Trafford and Dean Henderson to see what’s possible, what you can make of yourself, wherever in this area (or beyond) you come from.
A farm in Greysouthen is not perhaps the first place you would look for when searching for the best young goalkeeper in England. Why not, though? Trafford, next season, will play in the Premier League having joined Burnley from Manchester City, in the wake of inspirational feats with his country's Under-21s.
Through his talent, his support and encouragement at home, good environments both in childhood football and his development at an elite club, he is now in high circles indeed, deservedly so.
You can say the same of Henderson, another keeper from these parts considered a worthwhile eight-figure investment by another Premier League club. Another young Cumbrian who has shown the way to the top is available to anyone with the right ingredients and motivations.
Those conclusions might not put cash in the till on their own. But there are different ways to view the world. The first one, with these two goalies, must still be a heavy amount of local pride.
