New goalkeeping coach Dave Timmins is running the rule over Dan Langley before Carlisle United make a decision on the trialist keeper.
Former Newcastle United man Langley has been with the Blues throughout pre-season as he bids to earn a deal.
He got his latest outing in Tuesday’s pre-season friendly at Chorley.
That coincided with Timmins’ first game in the dugout since joining Paul Simpson’s backroom team.
Assistant manager Gavin Skelton confirmed that Timmins’ assessment of the 22-year-old was now a crucial part of the process.
“It was important he got his game on Tuesday, and the new goalie coach is here now, so he can assess him, which is important,” said Skelton.
“We’ll assess him in training and see how that goes.”
Langley has featured in five of Carlisle’s six friendlies to date.
He is hoping to earn a deal as back-up to first-choice gloveman Tomas Holy at Brunton Park.
Carlisle's final pre-season friendly is at home to Dundee United on Saturday with Holy, who was not in Tuesday's squad, expected to start the game.
United, meanwhile, handed young Cumbrian keeper Gabe Breeze his first pre-season outing in the closing stages at Chorley.
He came on for Langley as manager Simpson rang the changes in the second half.
“He’s performed well in training, he’s had minutes for the youth team but he’ll benefit from that,” said Skelton of Breeze’s appearance in Lancashire.
Breeze has also featured for Workington Reds during pre-season on a one-off basis.
