Carlisle United have sealed the signing of goalkeeper Jökull Andrésson.
The Iceland international has joined the Blues on a season-long loan from League One rivals Reading.
Andrésson will be expected to go straight into the squad for United’s League One trip to Oxford United this weekend.
The 21-year-old, who has a number of loan spells already under his belt, has answered Paul Simpson’s call for a keeper to put pressure on first-choice Tomas Holy.
The keeper is likely to be on the bench for the Cumbrians’ first away game of their third-tier campaign. Teenager Gabe Breeze has been Holy’s understudy for the previous two matches.
Andrésson, who has also just agreed a new deal at Reading until 2025, has been on their books for six years having joined the Royals from Icelandic club Afturelding.
Since then he has made a number of loan moves in the EFL and non-league. After an initial spell at Hungerford Town, he spent time with Exeter City in three separate spells, Morecambe twice and most recently Stevenage.
He was on loan with Steve Evans’ side last season when he made three appearances.
Andrésson is yet to appear in a first-team game for his parent club but has 48 Football League appearances under his name.
He is capped by his country at youth and full international level, his one full Iceland cap coming against Uganda in 2022.
Reading's head of football operations Mark Bowen told their website: "We were extremely pleased to be able to extend Jokull’s contract – he has been at the club for a long time and is very popular amongst the players and the coaches for both his attitude and personality.
“This loan move [to Carlisle] offers him the perfect opportunity to further hone his skills and stake a claim for a starting place in this division.
"We want him to gain the necessary experience this season to be able to come back and compete for the number one spot at Reading.”
Andrésson has taken Carlisle’s number of summer signings to ten, with boss Simpson still keen on bringing in another striker.
