Crystal Palace have emerged as strong contenders to sign Cumbrian goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
The south London club are reportedly in talks over a move for Manchester United's Whitehaven-born player.
It comes after the prospects of a long-expected move to Nottingham Forest stalled.
The Eagles are now in discussions with the Red Devils over the 26-year-old, the Evening Standard claim.
A loan deal now with an obligation to buy Henderson next summer is said to be in prospect.
The Cumbrian has been on the bench for Manchester United in their opening Premier League games after hopes of a summer move were dashed.
Henderson had been widely expected to return to Forest, where he spent last season on loan.
But the goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford has delayed a potential exit, with Man Utd eventually signing Andre Onana to replace David de Gea as first-choice No1.
An injury to experienced back-up Tom Heaton has seen Erik ten Hag turn to Henderson as his second-choice keeper in the early stages of the Premier League campaign.
Man Utd, though, are expected to bring in another back-up gloveman which would see Henderson allowed to leave.
The England international has long been craving regular first-team football after he returned to the spotlight with Forest last season.
He impressed in the first half of the season before injury curtailed his campaign.
Palace are in the market for a keeper after experienced Spaniard Vicente Guaita apparently refused to play for the club, after losing his place to Sam Johnstone.
Manager Roy Hodgson, speaking to Viaplay, said: "He's [Johnstone] the only one at the moment because Guaita is disenchanted with the club.
"He's made it clear to the club that really he would like to move on.
"He's been refusing to play in our games so far but the complication is that he has a year's contract so it's up to the club to decide really. Not him."
A loan move for Henderson would dash hopes at his former club Carlisle United of a financial boost through a sell-on clause this summer.
An eventual permanent deal could benefit the Blues, for whose academy Henderson played before joining Man Utd in 2011.
But Carlisle chief executive Nigel Clibbens recently stressed that any potential proceeds from a transfer involving the keeper would not be "transformational" to the Brunton Park club.
