Carlisle United have today added Fulham’s Terry Ablade to their strikeforce.
The 21-year-old Finland Under-21 international has joined on a half-season loan.
Ablade, who was born in Ghana before moving to Finland in childhood, signed for Fulham in 2018 from Finnish club FC Jazz.
He has been a regular scorer for the Cottagers’ Under-21s, and in 2022 had a loan spell in League One with AFC Wimbledon.
Here’s a look at some of the things that have been said about Ablade.
Carlisle boss Paul Simpson has made clear that pace is something the young frontman will bring to the table at Brunton Park.
“He certainly ticks the box of pace,” Simpson told the club’s website today. “He’s an exciting player who is really keen to show what he can do.
“He’s already had one loan out from his parent club that he openly admits didn’t go as well as he wanted it to.
“We’ve known about him for a while and I’ve seen things in him that I think will mean that he'll come here and cause teams problems.
“He's got pace to burn and that’s something we need. I think this is going to be a really good addition for us.”
Fulham’s official profile of the striker references some of his particular qualities.
“Terry is a young Finnish striker who signed for Fulham in July 2018 from Finnish side FC Jazz. He has been gifted with pace and power in abundance,” the club says.
“He grabbed his Under-18s chance with both hands, scoring a brace in his first start against Southampton and his performances during the 2019/20 season saw him make the leap up to PL2 football for the following campaign.
“Terry had a frustrating start to the 2021/22 season, spending much of his time sidelined with injury. He later spent the second half of the campaign at League One side AFC Wimbedon, but unfortunately couldn't help save them from relegation.
“He became a key figure again for our Under-21s last season, scoring 10 goals in 23 games across all competitions. Terry also hit a new milestone back in August, when he made his First Team debut in our EFL Cup game against Crawley Town.”
Mark Robinson, the then head coach of AFC Wimbledon, also spoke about Ablade’s traits when he signed him on loan in January 2022.
“He’s very quick over 15 to 20 yards, he loves to get in behind people and he’s got a real relentlessness about him," Robinson told the Dons website.
“One of the main bits of feedback I received was that even if he misses a chance he just keeps going and going - he never stops.
“His willingness to get in behind and his pace excited us. Terry is full of hard work and dedication.”
Fulham’s academy technical director Steve Wigley, previously Under-21s boss, also spoke about Ablade’s development along with that of a previous Carlisle loanee Sonny Hilton.
“With both of them, they have now worked out how to get success,” Wigley told The Athletic.
“You can only really judge young players at their best, when they know how to get the best out of themselves. They know what works for them and they have got a clear picture in their head.
“They know what they need to do to get in and get success, and be effective in a game. Once you know that, you can go and affect a game. You haven’t got muddy waters in your head.”
