Carlisle United’s new-found goal touch should generate confidence for the challenges ahead.
That’s the verdict of Gavin Skelton after the Blues trebled their tally in the space of two games.
United had hit just two goals in their opening five League One outings – but braces against Shrewsbury Town and Stevenage since then have provided welcome improvement.
Their recent efforts have taken the heat from questions about their scoring capabilities early into third-tier life.
And assistant boss Skelton says that should give everyone in the squad extra belief.
“It was a concern, obviously, but I feel we can still be better in those attacking areas, create more opportunities,” the coach said ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Lincoln City.
“But that’s definitely something – two positive results, and scoring two goals in both games, is bound to give the group and squad belief.”
Strikers have hit the net in United’s last two games with Joe Garner on target twice and Sean Maguire notching his first Blues goal.
With Joshua Kayode entering the fray after his deadline day move, Terry Ablade making some eyecatching sub appearances and Luke Plange striving to impress, Paul Simpson has a range of options in attack.
Kayode and Maguire were the strike pairing in the 2-2 draw at Stevenage with Garner, Ablade and Plange all coming off the bench.
Skelton stressed that such a new-look group was always likely to take some time to gel.
“The pleasing thing is we’ve got strikers scoring goals, with Joe and Seani, we’ve got good choices up front and that will be interesting,” he added.
“We’ve had an evolution of strikers so things take time.
“You try to do stuff in training, but you can’t replicate a game. We’ve also started to see relationships with Terry and Joe when they’ve come on, which is good.
“They complement each other well so it’s something I hope we see more of in the next couple of weeks.”
