Vincent Kompany has given his backing to young Cumbrian James Trafford amid a demanding start to Premier League life.
The Burnley boss absolved the Greysouthen goalkeeper from blame over Bournemouth’s winning goal on Saturday.
Trafford was lobbed by Philip Billing after the Clarets conceded possession.
It proved the decisive moment in the latest tough afternoon for the talented young Cumbrian and his newly-promoted team-mates.
Burnley sit 19th having conceded 25 goals in their ten top-flight games so far.
But Manchester City legend Kompany said of England Under-21 No1 Trafford: “There’s not much he can do about the second goal.
“You give the ball away like this, you take 90 per cent of the goalkeepers [in the division out of it].
“But other than that, he’s definitely showing a lot of maturity for his age. He will be fine, he will have a good career.”
Trafford, who joined Burnley from Man City in the summer, has made a big step up having previously been playing in League One with loan club Bolton Wanderers.
The former Carlisle United academy player is regarded as one of England’s top young goalkeeping prospects, with national team boss Gareth Southgate said to have been keeping tabs on his progress following Trafford’s starring role in the Under-21s’ Euros success this summer.
Kompany, speaking in the Burnley Express, said the 21-year-old and his team-mates must continue to keep working to deliver an improvement in form at Turf Moor.
“He’s like everyone else now, needing to perform. It’s the message for the whole team: keep going,” added the Burnley manager.
“You’re going to have to go through these moments, these guys know nothing else. It’s their life, it’s their job.
“Sometimes you’re on top and you’re the best, sometimes you’re on the bottom, so it’s about how you react. You have to get through it.”
