Leyton Orient boss on cup win against Carlisle United

The Os progressed to the second round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Paul Simpson’s side.

Wellens said United gave his side some problems early in the second half.

But he said the way Orient dealt with that was pleasing – and they finished them game with dominance.

“I thought we started the first 20 minutes really well, and then the last 15-20 minutes of the first half nothing really happened,” said Wellens.

“Their shape caused us a problem and I thought they were good for the first 20 minutes of the second half.

“We conceded a goal, which was probably my fault. We should have changed it – we were just about to change it, but when you’ve got a throw-in deep in their half it’s difficult to change it.

“We were unlucky but I should have changed it a few minutes earlier.

“But we were dominant in the last 20-25 minutes and could have scored a few more. All in all, it was a important game for us financially, and a good day.”

Wellens felt ref Sebastian Stockbridge was right to award his side an 11th minute penalty for Sam Lavelle’s high challenge on Dan Happe.

Carlisle felt there was a foul by an Orient player in the build-up but the home boss, speaking in a club interview, said: “I thought it was a penalty, not just for the kick in the head but I thought he was dragging him down.

“I’m pleased they’ve given that. I thought the referee was good, apart from a few cheap bookings.”

Wellens, meanwhile, highlighted the way his side carried the fight to Carlisle in the closing stages as key.

“Speed down the side is what got us territory when they were gambling a little bit,” he said, after goals from Aaron Drinan and Ruel Sotiriou buried the Blues after Joe Garner’s leveller.
