England Under-21 boss Lee Carsley has explained his decision to hand Cumbrian star Jarrad Branthwaite the captaincy.
It was a proud night for the former Carlisle United defender as he led the Under-21s to victory in their European Championships qualifier against Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
Branthwaite, from Wigton, captained the side for the first time in the 3-0 win.
Head coach Carsley said he wanted to encourage the highly promising defender to show his leadership potential.
“It was a way of showing how well we think he’s doing at the present, but it’s also something [leadership] we think he can add to his game as well," said Carsley, speaking via merseysportlive.
Branthwaite's pride at being named England Under-21 captain
“He is a quiet guy but the way he plays is very imposing. I thought he was excellent [on Tuesday]. It is something that he should be proud of, to lead the team out.’’
Branthwaite, who has made a big impact in the Premier League for Everton this season, turned in a composed defensive showing for England in the midweek win at his home club ground of Goodison Park.
The 21-year-old was joined in Tuesday's side by fellow Cumbrian, goalkeeper James Trafford from Greysouthen, as they combined to help England keep a clean sheet.
It was a second 3-0 win in quick succession for the Cumbrian duo and England after last Saturday's victory in Serbia.
