Former Carlisle United captain Morgan Feeney has been sidelined with what has been described as a "freak" injury.
Feeney, now with the Blues' League One rivals Shrewsbury Town, has suffered a kidney problem.
It has ruled the defender out of action for the division's 12th-placed side.
The 24-year-old was sidelined after the Shrews' 2-1 win over Port Vale on Saturday and missed their 0-0 draw at Exeter City on Tuesday night.
Speaking ahead of the game via the BBC and Shropshire Star, Shrewsbury boss Matt Taylor said: "Morgan Feeney has an injury with his kidney, a complete freak injury.
"We are hoping we can get him back in and around the group as soon as possible.
"The issue he has got is not something I have ever seen in football before so it is a difficult one."
Feeney has made 14 appearances for Shrewsbury since joining the club after turning down the chance to stay with the Cumbrians.
His return to Brunton Park earlier this season proved a stormy one with the ex-Everton and Sunderland man reacting angrily to United boss Paul Simpson in the post-match exchanges following Carlisle's 2-0 victory in September.
Other ex-Blues in the thick of the action on Tuesday night, meanwhile, included Sam Cosgrove, who scored a bizarre injury-time winner (below) for Barnsley - his first goal for the club - in their 1-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers.

In League Two, Adam Campbell scored a consolation goal for Crawley Town at Notts County as the hosts won 3-1.
Andy Cook converted a penalty in Bradford City's 3-0 win at Forest Green Rovers.
In National League North, George Glendon's penalty earned Chester a 1-1 draw at Rushall Olympic, while in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, Steven Rigg and David Symington were among the goals in Workington Reds' 4-4 draw at Marine.
In Scottish League One, meanwhile, young Blues loan duo Max Kilsby and Kai Nugent both started as Annan Athletic went down to a 2-1 home defeat to second-placed Hamilton Academical at Galabank.
