Bookmakers have cut Jarrad Branthwaite's odds to make a late run for the England squad in time for Euro 2024.
The Cumbrian defender is now 7/1 to make Gareth Southgate's final squad for next year's tournament in Germany.
Branthwaite has put himself in the picture after some impressive Premier League performances for Everton this season.
The 21-year-old ex-Carlisle United star, from Wigton, is a regular at the back for England Under-21s and captained the young Lions recently.
A number of observers and team-mates have been talking up his chances of promotion to the senior ranks which would cap his dramatic rise this season.
Branthwaite has shone for Sean Dyche's Toffees following a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last season.
SkyBet offer 7/1 for a Branthwaite call-up for the Euros behind the more established England squad members in defence such as Kieran Trippier, John Stones, Kyle Walker, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Guehi, who are all odds-on.
Branthwaite has longer odds than the likes of Ezri Konsa, who was called up by Southgate recently, and other contenders like Lewis Dunk, Fikayo Tomori and Tino Livramento.
But his chances are rated better than others such as Ben White, Joe Gomez, Rico Henry and Dan Burn.
Two more Cumbrians have outside chances of breaking into the squad, according to the bookies - both in the goalkeeping position.
Burnley's James Trafford, from Greysouthen, is 6/1 fifth favourite for one of the keeper slots in Southgate's ranks for the Euro finals.
The 21-year-old starred as the Under-21s won their European Championships this year and has been a regular for Burnley in the Premier League in 2023/24.
Dean Henderson is sixth favourite at 9/1, Crystal Palace's Whitehaven-born star only just back to fitness after a thigh injury. He made his top-flight debut for Palace in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City last weekend.
