Carlisle United fans gave us their reaction on social media platform X after the 2-1 defeat to Exeter City - here's a selection of their views...

Threw away a good 1st half performance. Had opportunities that we didn’t make the most of & shot ourselves in the foot at a crucial point in the game. Must learn quickly - if you can’t win it then don’t lose it. 100% behind Simmo long term, he’s the man to build/grow this club! (@fish_blues)

Seemed to think the game kicked off after 80 minutes? Why aren't we having a go at Exeter from the off, instead of sitting back and making them look like prime Brazil? (@buzzisbackCUFC)

We gift teams goals every week. Our record against teams is unacceptable. We need to increase the budget this month to stay up. Experienced league one players needed. (@carlisl9125)

1 point from games against Cheltenham, Fleetwood, Wigan and Exeter is criminal but ultimately tells us where we are at present…6 points adrift with a game played more than most it’s looking very bleak and all a bit depressing with all the good that’s going on off the pitch. (@Reay78)

As per…same boring overreaction to a loss from folk who’ll never have kicked a ball in their life . We’re a victim of our own success in a way but still time & Simmo will always be the man for the job. We’ll be where we deserve to be at the end of the season, simple as that (@AdWhitfield94)

We started reasonably well and needed to score first but couldn’t. Neal looked a useful addition. We have a fair few idiot fans who think they understand football better than Paul Simpson. If we do go down, stick with him until at least May 2025. (@ostrichtowers)

Appalling. Ball watching for 75 mins. We need promotion form for the rest of the season to be ok, no pressure at all there. For all the "let's be positive" crack as it stands we are on a 30+ game run of dire form. (@krisfoster)

Trying to keep the faith but not far from point we just need to think about next season and bouncing back. Gonna need a hell of a run to get out of this. Had kind fixtures lately but expected at least another 5-6 points from them. (@MarkDen40725244)

Simply not good enough. Tactically negative from the off, with a team in [Exeter's] form it beggars belief we didn’t attempt to be more front footed. What does Butterworth need to do to start?!? (@dnm_thegoose)

In front of the goal, if we took 30% of our chances, we would be safe....however, our defending is woeful. That said, Armstrong and Neale both look good signings, if only the rest were as good. (@BruceVander)

700 mile round trip to endure that dross (@rosshunter2003)

Not at our best today & made it too easy for them. Gave them too much time & space to play. Despite being well below par we created some good chances but really didn't make the best of them. Promising signs from Robinson, Emmanuel & Armstrong. Thought Neal was excellent on debut. (@BackoSkiddaw)

Can't keep showing up when we're 2-0 down in the 75th minute. Not sure what Maguire has done to keep his place in the starting 11. Butterworth has to start next week after his goal. 20 Cup finals (@JoshFairhurst11)

Need a lot more than the 1-2 new faces arriving he talked about last week, so many not good enough! Armstrong cost decent money but he needs the service and going off that today we need more players in to provide it ! (@cmackay414)

Sometimes facts have to morph into reality. A team that outperformed to get promoted - credit to all. But we’ve seen a low budget and arguably substandard L1 team, not performing in a much higher grade. The probability of survival outweighs the chance of survival, despite PS (@Jholliday3)

Very grim watch for the 290 of us there. Tactically inept (Simmo's responsibility) & very poor passing (players' responsibility). Happy to stick with Simmo into L2 (now looks inevitable) but there must be big improvements before end of season. (@MikeEwins)

Team of pea hearts I’m afraid to say. No character. However, 20 games without a clean sheet & brought in a defender with no first team games under his belt - we need 2 decent experienced centre halves asap. Lavelle as captain is as much of a joke as the recruitment itself has been. (@PeteMcCormick6)

If I want to say what I think I’d probably get a lifetime prison sentence without parole (@JoshuaMusgrave3)

Tactics all wrong again, players don’t look bothered. Looks like it’s only one way and that’s down sadly (@Harry Berkeley96)
