Luke Armstrong admits he’s relieved finally to be back in action – and relishing the challenge of firing Carlisle United to safety.

The new Blues striker believes the results the team need are within their grasp after his first two outings ended in defeat.

Record signing Armstrong joined from Harrogate Town and his debut at Exeter City last weekend ended a wait of nearly two months for a return to action.

That came as he was taken out of the firing line for Harrogate ahead of an anticipated move away from the League Two club.

“I’ve been dying to get back out on the pitch,” said the frontman.

“To be back out there is really good.

“It was great to make my home debut on Saturday in front of all of the fans. It was great to be in that atmosphere again and have that buzz of being back out on the pitch.

“Despite the results in my first two games, I’ve really enjoyed being back out on the pitch and I’m really hopeful for the next few months.”

Armstrong, who has signed a three-and-a-half year deal, had been on the brink of a move to Wrexham last summer only for a paperwork issue to dash the deal.

Months later and he is now in a higher division with United – although that status is in serious peril unless the Blues start winning soon.

“I feel like we’re building up a good understanding and getting stronger,” Armstrong insisted ahead of tonight’s trip to Barnsley.

“It doesn’t feel like we’re far away from getting results and that’s what we’re all aiming for.”

Armstrong hit the post at Exeter and was short of serious opportunities against Oxford United.

He believes goals for himself and the team will come.

“As a striker you’re always more disappointed if you aren’t getting opportunities,” said the 27-year-old in a club interview.

“I’ve had a few chances so far and we’ve had a few as a team so that is still a positive. We just need to get that final and most important little bit done, and I’m sure it’ll come.”

The frontman, meanwhile, said the deal he was offered by Carlisle was the kind of commitment he wants to pay back on the pitch.

“The backing that I’ve been given with the length of my deal is really good. It shows a lot of faith in me so I really want to repay that back to the club and the owners.

“I just want to do really well for this club,” he added.
