Luckless Carlisle United goalkeeper Jokull Andresson has suffered a SECOND shoulder fracture – extending his spell on the sidelines.
The Reading loanee had been on course for a return to action but he has damaged the same bone he had previously injured.
Andresson had been out since November and was aiming to be back this month.
Manager Paul Simpson said today: “Jokull has been back in training but has landed on his shoulder again and refractured the same thing.
“It’s a bit of a surprise because we had him rescanned and it looked like the fracture had healed.
“It’s broken on the same spot [on his scapula] again which is horrendous for Jokull and not great for us. He’s another player we’re going to be missing.”
The injury dashes Andresson’s hopes of forcing his way back into the first-team squad at Carlisle.
It leaves him down the goalkeeping pecking order after the recent arrival of Harry Lewis and the winter form of young Cumbrian Gabe Breeze, with former No1 Tomas Holy currently third choice.
Another player suffering injury frustration is Ben Barclay, with the defender still unable to return from a knee problem.
“It really is a frustration because he's had a scan, which has shown that there's no real acute injury,” said manager Simpson.
“It’s a long term thing that he's got in the meniscus, we are told, they don't think requires a surgery.
“It's a case of just managing it. When he gets pain free he can continue the work and he has a couple of days where he goes pain free, so we start to slowly introduce him back into some loading, and he just feels discomfort on some things.
“It's really daft things…because there can be times where he can do the work, but then he’ll go to put his socks on and he can feel a pain then in it.
“I don't really understand where it's at but I spoke to him this morning and he said it's the best he’s felt for a few days. So that's a positive. And so we've just got to hope that he continues to make improvements.”
Loan forward Terry Ablade has been signed off from his rehabilitation after a thigh injury, and he can return to training having been out since November.
Joshua Kayode and Josh Emmanuel are still not ready to return, added the Blues boss, who looks set to select from the same group of players for Saturday’s trip to Cheltenham Town.
Fit-again Fin Back is back in contention to start having made his return as a substitute at Barnsley on Tuesday night.
“He’s ready to start a game. He’s probably not ready for 90 minutes,” said Simpson of the Nottingham Forest loan defender.
“But it's a slow intro back into it because he had been out for a while.
“But he's ready. He's available. He wants to play. He's determined to play and that's the thing with Fin. But we've had to just nurse him back a little bit.
“So we've got good options now. Because in the ideal world, I would have liked to have rested Jack Ellis on Tuesday. My idea was to have energy in those wing-back slots. But we didn't have another option with Josh Emmanuel also being injured.
“But again, Josh is coming on really well. He's done some running. And he's going to keep building up. He's telling me, ‘I'm ready to go to full training’. But he's not yet. We've got to just make sure we get that right.”
