A trio of Carlisle United teenagers helped Workington Reds get back to winning ways.

Sam Hetherington, Aran Fitzpatrick and Jake Allan were all in Danny Grainger’s starting line-up against Matlock Town.

The youth team trio, who are all on work experience loans, helped the west Cumbrians claim a 2-1 victory in Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Hetherington was replaced in the 61st minute, full debutant Allan substituted after 75 minutes and Fitzpatrick subbed in the 79th minute of the Borough Park win.

It came after bright performances from the trio.

Reds led 2-0 at the break through goals from Dav Symington and Sam Smith, with a Ceiran Casson own-goal halving their lead. Grainger’s men sit 14th in the table, while the manager last night announced he would be leaving Workington at the end of the season.

Max Kilsby made his second start for Queen of the South but his wait to taste victory with the Doonhamers went on.

The on-loan Carlisle defender kept his place in Marvin Bartley’s XI to take on Montrose at Palmerston Park.

Kilsby played the first 86 minutes of his third appearance for the Scottish League One club.

Queens led through Lee Connelly before Michael Gardyne and a Graham Webster double put the visitors in command, Joel Mumbongo hitting a late consolation.

The Dumfries club sit seventh in Scotland’s third tier.

In the same division, United’s Kai Nugent made his 17th appearance for Annan Athletic in their 2-1 defeat at Cove Rangers.

Teenager Nugent played the full game for Peter Murphy’s side, who fought back from Rumarn Burrell to level through Michael Ndiweni before a late Josh Kerr strike for the hosts. Annan remain second bottom.

A number of ex-Blues were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

In the Premier League there was an impressive goal from Jarrad Branthwaite as he gave Everton the lead at Brighton & Hove Albion, before the Seagulls fought back late on to draw 1-1.

James Trafford’s latest outing in Burnley’s goal saw a 3-0 defeat for the Clarets at Crystal Palace, who had Dean Henderson and Luke Plange among their unused substitutes. Burnley saw Josh Brownhill sent off for a first-half foul after a misplaced Trafford pass.

Owen Moxon’s latest start for League One leaders Portsmouth came in a 0-0 draw at Charlton Athletic.

In National League North, Jordan Cook hit Blyth Spartans’ first goal in their 2-2 draw with Boston United.

Former Blues trialist Isaac Buckley-Ricketts was on target in Warrington Town’s 2-2 draw with Brackley Town.

In NPL Premier, Owen Windsor struck Marine’s opener in their 4-0 home win over Bradford Park Avenue.

Nathan Thomas’s first goal for Whitby Town helped them to a 2-1 win against Hyde United in the same division.

Former Carlisle youth player Jason Blackburn was Guisborough Town’s two-goal hero in their 2-1 win over Carlisle City, with visiting scorer Rob McCartney missing a late penalty for Jim Nichols’ side.

In the Isthmian League North Division, the evergreen Derek Asamoah was the hero for New Salamis.

The 42-year-old, who recently rejoined the club, scored twice, including the winner from the penalty spot, in a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Wanderers.

In the Welsh Premier, Brad Young hit a hat-trick for The New Saints as they won 8-1 at Caernarfon Town.
