Former Carlisle United striker Paddy Madden has agreed a move to one of the Blues' newly-promoted League Two rivals.

The experienced frontman is joining Chesterfield, it has been confirmed.

The move on a two-year deal follows Madden's departure from fourth-tier champions Stockport County, where he had failed to agree fresh terms.

The 34-year-old striker has been quick to secure his future having scored 22 goals to fire County to the League Two title in 2023/24.

He now links up with the Spireites who are back in the EFL after a six-year absence, having stormed to the National League title under Paul Cook.

Madden, speaking on the Chesterfield website, said: “I’m buzzing to get the deal done. It’s a massive club that I’ve always enjoyed playing against. The supporters have always followed the club fantastically.

“As soon as Paul [Cook] rang me, I knew I wanted to come and play for him and the club. He’s always been a brilliant manager.

“Obviously I won League Two with Stockport last season but who knows, what’s to say we can’t do it again?

“Football is about winning and I want to win football games, that’s what this club and manager do.

“I’m so excited to be here and I can’t wait to get going.”

Madden scored hit 65 goals in 157 Stockport appearances having spent the last three years at Edgeley Park.

He has long been one of the most reliable goalscorers in the third, fourth and fifth tiers.

The Dubliner, signed by Carlisle from Bohemians in 2011, scored just two goals in 36 appearances for the Cumbrians.

But his time in the English game took off when leaving the Blues for Yeovil Town in 2013 and he has enjoyed a prolific career with the Glovers, Scunthorpe United, Fleetwood Town and Stockport.

He was in the Stockport side that was beaten by Carlisle on penalties in the 2023 League Two play-off final at Wembley, but helped the Hatters bounce back to win the division 12 months later.

His new team-mates at Chesterfield will include the experienced ex-United midfielder Mike Jones.
