EX-CARLISLE United man Joe Riley has reunited with former Blues boss Chris Beech and National League club AFC Fylde.

The 27-year-old who started his career in the Manchester United youth set-up spent two seasons at Brunton Park after joining Beech's Carlisle in the summer of 2020.

Riley went on to make 84 appearances and score five goals under Beech, Keith Millen, and Paul Simpson during his time in North Cumbria.

The versatile player who can be deployed as a defender or midfielder, then left the Blues for Walsall but his first campaign with the Saddlers was seriously affected by injury, with Riley unable to make his debut until February 2023.

Riley was subsequently released by the West Midlands-based outfit and has now linked up with his former manager at Vanarama National League side AFC Fylde where he will play for the first time outside of English football's top four tiers.

After making the move, he spoke about his experiences working with Beech at Brunton Park.

Speaking on the club's website, he said: Since the interest started five weeks ago, it’s really excited me, I’ve worked with Beechy in the past, so I know his attitude towards wanting to be successful and what he brings as a manager, so it was a no brainer for me sign.

"Conversations with my agent and Beechy started a while back. I trusted Beechy and he trusted me as we’ve worked together in the past, so it was an easy decision.

"I’m glad it’s been sorted and over the line, so I’m excited to get started.

"I’m a tenacious player, a box-to-box midfielder and I like to get forward and create things and be a leader on the pitch.

"I think I’m an exciting player and can be a good driving point for the team."

Beech, who was in the Brunton Park dugout from November 2019 until October 2021 stepped in as caretaker manager at The Coasters at the end of 2023 before being joined by former Carlisle United captain Nick Anderton as an assistant coach.

Since his takeover, the former Blues boss shepherded AFC Fylde away from the relegation zone and was rewarded with a contract extension at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

On his reunion with Riley, he said: "I’m personally really pleased to acquire Joe Riley’s signature early for the 2024/25 season squad build.

"His personality and professionalism are infectious and will add value both on and off the pitch in and around AFC Fylde.

"Having worked with Joe before he is a very technical, energised player with a burning ambition to be successful.

"I see Joe giving us a different dynamic option to the midfield area while also providing great cover for both Full backs supporting our fast and attacking style of play.

"Joe is currently a very motivated individual with a will to make a significant impact."
