CARLISLE United fans have shared their thoughts after the club announced that it has agreed a deal to sign Scottish goalkeeper Jude Smith.

Smith, formerly of Celtic and East Fife, will move to Brunton Park following the expiry of his contract at his current club Newcastle United, and once the transfer window officially opens on Friday, June 14.

The 21-year-old shot-stopper will be Carlisle United's second signing of the summer so far after the club re-signed defender Aaron Hayden following his release from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham AFC.

After the Blues announced that they had struck a deal to bring in Smith, supporters and News & Star readers took to social media to give their thoughts.

Should add good competition to our two other keepers. (Stephen Bell)

If he’s as good as our old Scottish keeper Rossy then we’ll do ok. (Alan Parkins)

Seem to have signed more goalkeepers than enough in the last twelve months and none so far look like they have been a good signing, all full of easy mistakes. (Stephen Hickson)

After all the rumours over the last two weeks think it’s a bit underwhelming. (@Chris_CA2)

Happy to give him a chance but would be very surprised if Harry Lewis is not the goalkeeper on the opening day of the season (@JRBulman)

Give the lad a chance. Westwood was signed as a young project keeper and he turned out rather well in the end. (@DJGale1983)

Massive gamble as usual. Need someone to replace Lewis, not just cover him. (@mincerayder)

Don't mind this at all. We were never gonna pay a fee for another keeper this summer. As a League Two club, we should be looking at local Premier League teams and their free agents. Hope he develops into another Kieron Westwood. Won't be on big money so not the end of the world if he isn't. (@leej1976)
