FORMER Carlisle United Academy product Steven Swinglehurst has agreed to join Workington Reds.

The 31-year-old defender spent nine years progressing through Carlisle United's youth ranks before moving to Annan Atheltic where he spent 12 years.

During this spell at Galabank, he played an influential part in Annan's journey under managers Harry Cairney, Jim Chapman, and Peter Murphy.

In that time Swinglehurst has been involved in play-off campaigns as well as big league and cup games against the likes of Rangers and Aberdeen.

He had a testimonial in 2022 while last year helped the Galabankies to a first-ever promotion to Scottish League One before they secured survival in 2023/24.

Following the decade at Galabank, Swinglehurst, who was born in Upperby, has agreed to link up with new Workington Reds boss Mark Fell at Borough Park.

"Steven is a great fit for us, he's experienced, a leader, and has excellent qualities as a centre half," Mark Fell said on the club's website.

"He's in really good shape and is the type of committed, brave defender who will put his heart and soul into preventing the opposition, something I know our supporter will enjoy watching."

After agreeing to sign for the Reds, Swinglehurst called the move a 'no-brainer'.

He said: "Signing for Workington was a no-brainer for me.

"They are a team on the up, and I'm excited to be a part of that.

"After speaking with the gaffer over the last couple of weeks, I am confident that we can put his plans into action on the pitch.

"I've got a great feeling about what's to come, and hope to contribute to a successful season for the fans."
