Former Carlisle United defender Rod McDonald will face the Blues next season after joining one of their League Two rivals.

The well-travelled centre-back has made the move to Notts County from Harrogate Town.

McDonald, a Carlisle player from 2020 to 2022, joins the Magpies after a year with Harrogate.

County have paid an undisclosed fee for his services and handed the 32-year-old a two-year deal at Meadow Lane.

Notts director Richard Montague told the club website: “Rod, with his proven track-record as a strong EFL defender, adds fantastic depth to our backline.

“As well as excellent defensive qualities, physical stature and ability on the ball, he brings added leadership and know-how into the group.

“He has won two promotions from this division and was named Crewe’s player of the season in 2022-23, so we have every confidence he’s going to be a brilliant addition to the squad.”

Former Coventry City, Northampton Town, AFC Wimbledon defender McDonald was a Chris Beech signing for Carlisle in the summer of 2020.

He made 66 appearances over two campaigns, scoring once, before being released by Paul Simpson at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Another ex-United man is on the move, meanwhile.

Adam Campbell has left newly-promoted Crawley Town and joined Hartlepool United.

The former Blues loan player has opted to depart League One new boys Crawley at the end of his current contract, and return to his native north east in the National League.

Campbell, who had two spells at Carlisle in the 2013/14 and 2018/19 campaigns, spent last season with Crawley and played his part in the Sussex club's promotion through the fourth-tier play-offs.

"Everybody at Crawley Town Football Club would like to wish Adam all the best in his future endeavours and would like to thank him for his contributions during his time at the Broadfield Stadium," the club said in a statement.

Campbell's move to the Monkey Hangers was then confirmed. "It is a real coup for Pools when a player such as Adam agrees to sign, given that he has just experienced promotion to League One with another club that he could have stayed on with," said Hartlepool boss Darren Sarll.

"He also had a great deal of interest from other league clubs following an excellent season."
