Former Carlisle United defender Tom Aldred has made a move to Indian football.

He has joined Indian Super League champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant ahead of the new season.

Former United youth team product Aldred, 33, has moved to India after the end of a five-year spell in Australia with Brisbane Roar.

His new team-mates at Mohun include the Australia international striker Jason Cummings and Albania international forward Armando Sadiku.

Aldred, speaking after his signing was confirmed, said: "“I am delighted to be joining Mohun Bagan Super Giant FC.

"It will be an honour to wear the green and maroon jersey, and I am extremely excited to get started.

“My career has taken me to England, Scotland, Australia and now India. I am looking forward to this next step of my journey in representing this incredible club in the ISL and the Asian Champions League and helping the team thrive and compete on all fronts."

Jose Molina, Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s head coach, added: “Tom Aldred is an experienced player to strengthen our defence.

"He has a great physique, forceful and is very aggressive defensively. Tom is a dominator in aerial balls and also has good technique to the build-up play.”

It is the latest step in a professional career which started at Carlisle after Aldred came through Eric Kinder's under-18 side.

He earned a professional deal with the Blues but only made six first-team appearances before moving to Watford.

Since then he has played for Colchester United, Accrington Stanley, Blackpool, Bury, Motherwell and Brisbane as well as a number of loan moves earlier in his career.

Aldred's new club topped the ISL table last season.

Another ex-United man is on the move in League Two, meanwhile.

Goalkeeper Ben Amos, who was on loan with Carlisle from Manchester United in the 2013/14 campaign, has signed for Port Vale.

He has linked up with Darren Moore's Valiants after leaving League One side Wigan Athletic.
