Former Carlisle United coach Paul Gerrard is back in the game - with a League One move.

He has been appointed goalkeeping coach at Peterborough United ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Gerrard held a similar position at United from 2022 to 2023 and was a key member of Paul Simpson's backroom staff as the Cumbrians won promotion.

He then left on the eve of pre-season last year.

The 51-year-old is now reunited with Posh manager Darren Ferguson who said: "“I worked with Paul at Doncaster, he is a very good coach and as a player he has a wealth of experience at a really good level.

"He has a wonderful work ethic and I am delighted that he has agreed to come on board."

Ferguson, speaking to the Peterborough website, said the chance to work with Gerrard again was "too good to turn down".

Gerrard himself added: "“I am really looking forward to the opportunity and to work with the manager again.

"It is a good time to come into the club, at the start of pre-season, to get to know the players and of course the goalkeepers we have at the club."

After Gerrard's departure, United turned to Simon Smith on a short-term basis before bringing in Dave Timmins as Gerrard's permanent replacement.

Timmins then left at the end of last season to return to his previous club Ayr United. Carlisle have since appointed Glen Johnson as their new goalkeeping coach.

A former United loan star has made a Championship move, meanwhile.

Striker Jerry Yates has completed a move to Derby County from Swansea City on a season-long loan.

Yates, who was on loan at Carlisle from Rotherham United in the 2018/19 season, said: "I’m excited. I’m so happy to be here and, to be honest, I just want the season to start already."
