A second former Carlisle United player has linked up with National League North club Southport.

Striker Jamie Proctor has signed for the Sandgrounders, joining Sonny Hilton at Haig Avenue.

Proctor, after leaving Barrow, recently announced his retirement from full-time football.

But he has been persuaded to continue in the game at Southport by manager Jim Bentley at a time the former Blues loan man is focusing on a business venture.

"Jim got in touch and said, 'We're building something here' - you can come in a couple of days a week, and continue the work you're doing away from football'.

"As soon as I had the conversation with him, it's been positive," he added to the club's media channels.

Manager Bentley said he was very pleased with the arrival of 32-year-old Proctor.

He said: "I know character-wise what he brings us.

"He's a big lad, he's got four promotions under his belt in his career. He could still be playing full-time, he's an EFL player.

"He's making that transition [away from full-time football] but he's a good centre-forward, robust, knowledgeable, and he's a good person - he ticks a lot of boxes."

Proctor is a director of the business High Performance Individuals, a financial management service for clients in sport, media, entertainment and business.

His time at Carlisle came in the second half of the 2016/17 campaign, when he joined Keith Curle's Blues on loan from Bolton Wanderers.

He scored four goals in 19 games - including, memorably, the winner at Exeter City on the final day of the season which clinched a play-off place for United.

Proctor's other clubs include Preston North End, Crawley Town, Fleetwood Town, Bradford City, Rotherham United and Port Vale.

He left Barrow at the end of last season after one goal in 27 outings for the south Cumbrian club.
