Peter Murphy is off to winning ways with his new club Queen of the South.

The Carlisle United legend guided the Doonhamers to a first victory since he took the helm this summer.

Queens defeated Dumbarton 2-0 in their second group game in the Premier Sports Cup.

The game at Palmerston Park saw Queens get the better of their fellow League One side with a goal in each half.

Leighton McIntosh fired Murphy's side into a seventh-minute lead and Kieran McKechnie made it 2-0 just before the hour mark.

That was enough to get points on the board for Queens in Group A, following their defeat to Premiership side Aberdeen on Saturday, with the Dumfries side now sitting third.

Next up for Murphy and his side in the competition is a trip to East Kilbride next Tuesday.

Murphy's former club Annan Athletic, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Bonnyrigg Rose before losing on penalties in their second group encounter.

Wullie Gibson's Galabankies fought back from Bradley Barrett's opener for the visitors and goals from Paul McGowan and Paul Smith put Annan in front.

But a late leveller from Brad Rodden meant a shoot-out would decide who would get the bonus point.

Things went to sudden death before Ryan Muir's saved attempt saw Bonnyrigg win the shoot-out 7-6.

Among those to score for Annan in the shoot-out was Max Kilsby, who was making his first appearance since rejoining the club permanently following his release from Carlisle United.

Also north of the border, Carlisle's next opponents St Mirren have brought in a new defender ahead of Friday's friendly.

Alex Iacovitti has joined the Buddies on a two-year deal from Port Vale.

Annan are second in Group D after two games, having defeated Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday. They next face a trip to Arbroath on Saturday.
