WE shared the news that Gareth Southgate has stood down as England manager, saying it is time for a "new chapter" for the national team.

He announced his decision to quit in a statement issued by the Football Association on Tuesday morning (July 16), following the team's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday night, reports the Press Association.

Here's what readers thought.

Linda Robinson said: "Well done to reach the final, good luck for the future."

Steven Hunt said: "He's certainly got us closer to winning something than anyone else lately but no stand-out candidates from the UK come to mind. Being lauded for quarter-final or semi-final appearances are a thing of the past. Thanks Gareth. Enjoy retirement."

Liam Brown and Ben Waugh both said Eddie Howe would make a good manager for England, while Ian Outram said Jurgen Klopp should be next.

Linda Weightman and Les Graham said they would choose Alan Shearer as the next manager.

Ron Smith said: "While Southgate is receiving all these credits, we still have won nothing. Until we go back to a system when premier clubs can only play a limited amount of non-English players the trophy cupboard will remain empty."

One web user said: "One thing they can't take away from Southgate that is he is the only manager who has taken England to two finals."
