A look at some of the latest news and gossip from around Carlisle United’s division…

GIBSON OFF THE MARK

Jordan Gibson has notched his first goals for new club Doncaster Rovers following his move from Carlisle United.

The attacking midfielder scored twice in Donny’s 4-0 win at Stamford.

He told Rovers+: “It’s the first run-out, it was just glimpses of what I can do but there’s more to come.”

BLACK CATS PROSPECT SIGNS

Former Sunderland winger Ellis Taylor has become Harrogate Town’s third summer signing.

The 21-year-old has been on trial with the Sulphurites and has impressed boss Simon Weaver.

He has signed a two-year deal. Head of recruitment Lloyd Kerry said of Taylor: “He’s an exciting player, can play off both feet, likes to make things happen and it feels like a good fit for us.”

DONS LAND EAGLES KEEPER

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Owen Goodman will be playing in League Two next season after linking up with AFC Wimbledon.

The 20-year-old has signed a season-long loan deal.

He previously had a spell with Colchester United. “We’ve had to be patient to get Owen in but we were always really sure that he is the man we want,” said Dons boss Johnnie Jackson.

EX-GUNNER ON TRIAL

Newly-promoted Chesterfield are taking a look at former Arsenal youth defender Vontae Daley-Campbell, reports the Derbyshire Times.

The 23-year-old ex-England youth player, who was with the Gunners from nine to 18 before spells at Leicester City, Cardiff City and Peterborough United, played in the Spireites’ friendly against Alfreton Town.

James Berry and Tom Naylor scored Chesterfield’s goals in their first pre-season win.

SUNDERLAND DEFENDER’S MARINERS CHANCE

Grimsby Town are running the rule over Sunderland defender Henry Fieldson.

He featured as a trialist in the Mariners’ 2-0 win over Boston United.

Another trialist, Tolu Ladapo, scored in the victory and manager David Artell is set for talks with the forward, according to BBC Humberside.

NEW BOSS’S FIRST OUTING

Nelson Jardim chalked up a victory in his first game as Newport County’s head coach.

The newly-appointed Portuguese boss saw his side win 2-0 against Pontypridd United.

Bryn Morris and Cameron Antwi got the goals to get Jardim’s reign off to a winning start.

NEW BARROW MAN HAPPY

Barrow AFC’s new defender Theo Vassell feels he has made the right move.

The 27-year-old has joined the Bluebirds after three years at Salford City.

But he has now signed a one-year deal in south Cumbria, and told the Barrow website: “I felt now was the right time to make a change within my career. Having spoken with the gaffer and talked about his visions for the future and what he thinks of me, I’m now really excited and looking forward to getting going here at Barrow.”

GILLS LINKED WITH HAMMER

Carlisle’s opening-day opponents Gillingham are weighing up a possible move for West Ham United forward Kamerai Simon-Swyer.

The 21-year-old played in the Gills’ friendly against Millwall, having been with Crawley Town last season.

“West Ham gave him permission to be in for a couple days and train,” boss Mark Bonner told KentOnline. “It’s a good chance for us to have a look at him before we make a decision on whether we do anything on that one, and whether he wants to do it.”

SADLER EYES STRIKERS

Walsall boss Mat Sadler is hoping to bring in two new frontmen before the start of the season.

The Saddlers already have some experienced options in attack but the Bescot boss wants more.

“The job for us now is to add a couple of strikers at the top end of the pitch,” said Sadler, speaking via the Express & Star. “We’re lucky to have Josh [Gordon], Jamille [Matt] and Danny [Johnson] and we want to add further strength to that now.”
