Former Carlisle United defender James Chester has made a League Two move.

The experienced centre-back has signed for Salford City, having been with Barrow AFC last season.

Chester, 35, had been offered a new deal to remain in south Cumbria but he has opted to head to the Peninsula Stadium ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The man who impressed on loan at Carlisle from Manchester United back in the 2010/11 season is delighted to prolong his career with his latest move.

“I still have a desire to play and win, so hopefully the supporters will see that from me," the veteran defender told the Salford website.

“I was out in Dublin with the squad last week and it is a really good group to be around, and there are a lot of young players here too, so hopefully I can help them and bring them along as well.

“I think the week as a whole was brilliant, it was a tough week but I think one which is important to have at this stage of the season to get yourself ready for the opening day.

“I still have the desire to carry it on and take it further, and all the Salford fans will see that.”

Chester will face Carlisle at Salford on November 9 in the new campaign, and will then return to Brunton Park on the final day of the season on May 3.

The defender made 24 appearances for Greg Abbott's Carlisle in the first half of the 2010/11 season, before joining Hull City.

He has since played for West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Stoke City and Derby County, before making 41 appearances for Barrow last term.
