The Workington Festival of Running is set to take place next month.

The event, which invites participants of all ages and abilities, is being organised by Workington Town Council in collaboration with the Cumberland Athletics Club.

The event is due to take place on August 4 and includes various runs such as a one-kilometre fun run, a five-kilometre run, a 10-kilometre and a half marathon.

This marks the first time a half marathon has been organised in the town for 40 years.

Cllr Ellie Wood, chair of Workington Town Council’s Culture and Community Committee, said: "We are delighted to be able to bring the half marathon back to Workington after 40 years.

"There will be medals for finishers, plus certificates and prizes, plus crafts and food and drink in the Reds clubhouse.

"Even if you are not running, come along and show your support."

Dan Wilson, chairperson of Cumberland AC, said: "I'm really excited about the Festival of Running, especially the addition of the half marathon.

"Running is brilliant for mental and physical health so we want to get as many people involved as possible.

"Whether you're already a quick runner hunting a new PB, or a complete novice looking to start your running journey, there's something for you at the Workington Festival of Running."

The festival has received sponsorship from Aqua Pura, a mineral water company, as well as David Allen IT Solutions and Jim Walton Penrith Ltd.

Matthew Fearn, Aqua Pura deputy plant manager, said: "Aqua Pura are proud to have the opportunity to support local causes such as these, which benefit the local community and promote a healthier lifestyle."

Entrants have the option of running the one-kilometre fun run in fancy dress, with a prize on offer for the best costume.

The fun run is free to enter, while other races require entry fees of £8 for the five kilometre, £14 for the 10k and £24 for the half marathon.

The events will have a limited entry of 200 participants each.

UKA-affiliated runners will be provided a £2 discount, while entrants for both the 5k and 10k races will also get a £2 discount online.

However, there will be an added £3 charge for entries on the day.

Prizes including medals, certificates and drawstring bags will be awarded to runners on completion of the half marathon, 10k and 5k.

Runners in the half marathon and 10k will be given a free drink and snack upon finishing their race.

A prize presentation will take place once all runners have completed each race.

Free massages will be available throughout the day.

Adults accompanying a child won't need to enter the fun run or bear a number unless they want a medal.

This will provide more room for the children to participate.
