Paul Simpson has praised teenage forward Freddie O’Donoghue for “punching above his weight” in Carlisle United’s pre-season.

And the youth team player looks set to remain in United’s first-team picture for a little longer.

Second-year youth player O’Donoghue has featured in all four of the Blues' friendlies so far.

The 17-year-old prospect from the Isle of Man scored in Carlisle’s first outing at Penrith whilst last Friday’s 2-2 draw at St Mirren saw O’Donoghue earn praise from Simpson for his late impact on Carlisle’s comeback.

“I’ve got to mention young Freddie, because he came on and showed great enthusiasm, good pace and also a real spirit to get involved in that little scuffle with [Shaun] Rooney,” said Simpson.

“He was punching way above his weight, but he didn't back down and I like that. He's shown some real spirit.”

Simpson said O’Donoghue and fellow teenager Jake Allan had an influential part in Terell Thomas’ late equaliser at St Mirren, in the way they unsettled the Scottish Premiership side’s goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe at a corner.

Asked if O’Donoghue would remain with Simpson’s senior group for the time being, the manager added: “Yes, probably. Until we've got others who might take his place.

“But I always think if they get the opportunity, these young lads, they have to go and take it. And he's certainly taken it.

“As I think [fellow teenagers] Jake Allan has, Sam Hetherington has, Fitzy [Aran Fitzpatrick] has.

“There were little things against St Mirren that Fitzy needs to tighten up on. But all in all, I've been pleased with them.”

O’Donoghue joined United’s youth set-up last summer having previously played for Manx side Peel AFC.

He is preparing for the second year of his under-18 scholarship with the Blues, who take on Rochdale in their latest pre-season friendly this Saturday.
