Former Carlisle United prospect Liam McCarron has made a League One move.

He has joined Northampton Town after a successful trial with the Cobblers.

The move sees the 23-year-old Blues academy product sign a one-year deal with the option of a further year.

Northampton have paid an undisclosed fee to bring in left-sided McCarron ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Sixfields Stadium boss Jon Brady said McCarron had turned down other interest to sign for the club.

"Liam has done well on trial with us over the last couple of weeks and we are pleased to welcome him to the club," Brady told the Cobblers' website.

"He has been training with us for a while now so we know he will fit in well with the group and we have been pleased with what we have seen.

"He is strong and he travels well with the ball.

"He can play in both attacking and defensive positions all down the left hand side and inverted on the right hand side giving us flexibility in formations and systems, and he has speed and the ability to break the back line in attack.

"Liam has a good pedigree, he has some big clubs on his CV but he is at the stage where he needs to start adding appearances. He is motivated to do that here and we feel we can help improve and develop his game.

“There was other interest in him and we are pleased he has chosen to join us.”

McCarron, who was born in Preston but grew up in Appleby, came through United's youth set-up and made his first-team debut at 17.

The pacy player went on to make 20 first-team appearances for the Blues in the 2018/19 season before being sold to Leeds United that summer.

He made one first-team appearance for the Elland Road club - a Premier League outing against Arsenal - before moving on to Stoke City in 2022.

He only made one first-team appearance for the Potters, whilst also getting four games on loan with Port Vale.

His trial at Northampton included an impressive pre-season showing against Norwich City, and he now joins fellow ex-United left-back Patrick Brough on the books at Sixfields.
