A former Carlisle United loan man has made a move to the Premier League.

Conor Townsend, who played for the Blues in the 2013/14 campaign, has joined newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys have paid West Bromwich Albion an undisclosed fee for the 31-year-old left-back.

He links up with Kieran McKenna's squad ahead of their return to the top-flight.

"I’m delighted to be here," Townsend told Ipswich's official channels.

“To play in the Premier League again is a big challenge for me and this kind of opportunity doesn’t come around very often so I jumped at the chance.

“The move came around quite quickly and I’m excited to get started. I have had good conversations with the manager and everyone speaks very highly of him, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working under him."

Townsend was on United's books in 2013/14 after making a loan move from Hull City.

Signed by Greg Abbott, he made his debut in the 1-0 home defeat to Port Vale which proved Abbott's last game as Blues manager.

He remained a regular part of the side under Abbott's successor Graham Kavanagh and made 17 appearances in league and cup before a broken foot curtailed his campaign.

He went on to play for Dundee United, Scunthorpe United and Grimsby Town on loan before returning to Scunthorpe permanently in 2016.

Two years later he moved to the Hawthorns where he has made 213 appearances for West Brom.

He is a second ex-Carlisle man on the books at Portman Road, former United youth team player Ryan Carr also with the Tractor Boys - while Liam Delap, son of ex-Blues star Rory, also signed for Ipswich this summer.
