Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson says Ben Barclay is "certainly" a midfield option as the Blues count the cost of injuries.

Defender Barclay went into the holding midfield position against Stockport County on Saturday after the injury to Dylan McGeouch.

With McGeouch doubtful and Ethan Robson definitely out of the League Two opener at Gillingham this weekend, the Blues’ numbers in the middle of the park are reduced.

Simpson is hoping to add new signings in the position but he also feels Barclay is versatile enough to do the job if needed.

“It is an option for us without a doubt because he's a comfortable footballer,” said Simpson, who introduced Barclay from the bench after McGeouch’s 18th-minute groin injury during Saturday’s 2-1 victory.

“He gives us good physicality in there.

“I was also pleased with the way he went about it last Tuesday at Gateshead when he went in there, even though it was a horrible performance from everybody.

“He certainly does give us that option in there – and then he's also got that long throw in his locker which, as much as people may frown at that, it's a nice weapon to have.”

It was Barclay’s long throw against his former club which helped create United’s winning goal on Saturday, scored by Luke Armstrong.

The possibility of a midfield role may reopen the door to 27-year-old Barclay for a starting place given Simpson’s preferred defensive line appears to be taking shape.

The Blues boss opted for Aaron Hayden, Terell Thomas and Jon Mellish as his three centre-backs, with Archie Davies and Cameron Harper at wing-back.

Barclay and Sam Lavelle are the other two main central defensive options, with Jack Ellis coming off the bench for Davies on the right late in the Stockport game.

Simpson has said he is prioritising midfield in the transfer market and would like a new face in before the big kick-off, but said he will not be “panicking” should that prove elusive.

Harrison Neal and Josh Vela are Carlisle’s main central midfield options, with Taylor Charters also hoping to be fit this week.

The Maryport man missed the Stockport win after feeling some discomfort in his hamstring. Simpson said Charters hopes to be back in training today.
