Teenage Carlisle United defender Josh O’Brien helped Carlisle City return to winning ways.

The 18-year-old defender’s latest start for Dan Kirkup’s side came in their Northern League Division One trip to Northallerton Town.

And O’Brien played the full 90 minutes as he contributed to a 2-1 victory.

It was his fifth outing for City, who won thanks to goals from Jordan Irving and Kieron Blair to go 11th in the table.

Next up for O’Brien and his team-mates is a Cumbrian derby, with City travelling to Kendal Town on Tuesday night.

A number of former Carlisle United men were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

In League Two, Jordan Gibson marked his Doncaster Rovers debut with a well-taken goal as Grant McCann’s side swept aside Accrington Stanley 4-1.

Gibson’s curling shot from outside the box came in the 68th minute to put Donny 3-1 up.

Omari Patrick came off the bench in the 69th minute for his Tranmere Rovers debut as they were held 0-0 at home by Notts County.

John-Kymani Gordon was in from the start for his Colchester United debut but the U’s started the campaign with a 4-2 defeat at Gordon’s former club AFC Wimbledon.

Ryan Bowman enjoyed a winning Cheltenham Town debut as they claimed a 3-2 victory over Newport County.

Byron Webster captained Bromley to victory in their first EFL game, the new boys winning 2-0 at Harrogate Town.

Danny Grainger’s first competitive game as Morecambe assistant manager saw the Shrimps lose 1-0 at Walsall. Hallam Hope was in the Morecambe starting XI for his debut while Tom White came off the bench.

Coe Stockton’s Salford City debut saw a 2-0 home defeat to Port Vale.

Adam Campbell made his first Hartlepool United outing in their 1-0 win at Yeovil Town, while Mark Beck came off the bench for his first Gateshead outing as they thrashed Ebbsfleet United 5-1.

In the Northern Premier League Premier Division, Nathan Thomas’ strike for Whitby Town proved a consolation in their 2-1 home defeat to Bamber Bridge.

In Northern League Division One, Jason Blackburn scored to seal a 2-0 win for Guisborough Town at Newcastle Blue Star.

Penrith, under boss Darren Edmondson and assistant manager Richard Prokas, claimed their third win from four league games as they came from behind to defeat Tow Law Town 3-1.
