Carlisle United 0 Stoke City 2: Two second-half goals by Championship side Stoke ended Carlisle's interest in the Carabao Cup at the first round stage.
A header by 17-year-old debutant Freddie Anderson put the Blues behind early in the second half before 18-year-old Stoke sub Emre Tezgel sealed their victory.
Carlisle had performed well in the first half and gave their second-tier visitors some problems, but Stoke's superiority told after the break.
Anderson, son of England legend Viv, found space to head home a free-kick on 47 minutes while Tezgel went through and scored with his first touch ten minutes from time.
The Potters also hit the woodwork twice while chances for Archie Davies, Charlie Wyke and Jon Mellish were in vain for the Blues in front of a 4,441 crowd that included 894 travelling Stoke supporters.
Simpson decided against major changes to his side, Jack Ellis's recall in place of Ben Williams the only alteration from the XI that had started in Saturday's 4-1 League Two defeat to Gillingham.
Teenager Sam Hetherington was added to the Blues' substitutes, while Stoke boss Steven Schumacher made eight changes to the team that defeated Coventry City in the Championship on Saturday.
Wouter Burger, Ben Wilmot and Million Manhoef were the only players retained in the Potters team, while Schumacher gave debuts to 17-year-old defenders Freddie Anderson - son of England legend Viv - and Jaden Dixon, with Liverpool's 18-year-old loan attacker Lewis Koumas (son of Jason) also in the side.
Stoke had the greater share of possession to begin with and Harry Lewis' failure to reach a cross gave Carlisle some early concern.
But United survived that scare and gradually worked their way into some good positions when they broke against their second-tier visitors.
Archie Davies enjoyed two opportunities in quick succession, first firing just over the bar from the edge of the box, then rifling wide when a corner had been worked back his way inside the box.
Stoke then countered and Niall Ennis came close when shooting across goal and inches wide.
An end-to-end spell then brought a chance for Harrison Neal, who warmed veteran debutant keeper Frank Fielding's gloves with a powerful low shot.
At the other end Lewis saved well from Lewis Koumas before Neal got under another attempt from the edge of the area.
Lewis was then sharply off his line to save from Ennis when the Stoke frontman got clear, and then the pacy Koumas got away from Aaron Hayden but couldn't pick out his team-mates in the middle.
Carlisle's defenders had plenty of work on their hands to keep the Potters' dangermen in check, Jon Mellish doing some strong work to limit their threat as, midway through the half, Schumacher's side exerted further control in possession.
The woodwork then came to United's rescue when, after Lewis had denied Ennis, the ball broke to Sol Sidibe, but he lifted his shot against the crossbar.
United then ended the half positively and came close to an opener two minutes from the break, when Neal broke onto a clearance and crossed low, but Charlie Wyke steered a first-time shot wide.
Early in the second half an enterprising run by Davies earned a free-kick just outside the box but Carlisle couldn't take advantage.
Stoke then attacked and got in front, Koumas fouled by Hayden on the left and a free-kick, worked short, then clipped high to the back post where Anderson was free to head across Lewis and in for a debut goal.
The visitors then almost took the tie further away from United when, in the 57th minute, Manhoef cut in from the right and curled a shot high past Lewis but saw the ball hit the underside of the bar and bounce just in front of the line as Carlisle cleared.
Simpson made his first changes on the hour mark, Luke Armstrong and Williams replacing Adu-Adjei and Davies, and then a good attack involving Josh Vela and Ellis ended with Fielding saving from Neal.
A corner then saw Ben Barclay challenge and Mellish denied in front of the line as he tried to hook it in, before Dan Butterworth was introduced from the bench as Carlisle looked for a way back.
Stoke almost clinched it when Daniel Johnson slid over a cross but Ennis, sliding in, couldn't connect in front of goal.
Schumacher had made two changes by that point, then made a further three - and one of the latest introductions, Tezgel, quickly latched onto a through-ball to make it 2-0 with his first senior goal, Lewis getting something on the shot but the ball looping behind him and into the net as Hayden gave forlorn chase.
Carlisle could find no way back as Stoke comfortably saw things out to move into Wednesday night's second round draw - with United now focusing on Saturday's League Two home clash with Barrow.
