Barrow AFC boss Stephen Clemence has described this weekend’s clash with Carlisle United as a game that “means a lot” to their fans.
The Bluebirds are preparing for the all-Cumbrian encounter at Brunton Park on Saturday.
Clemence intends to keep Barrow on the “front foot” in terms of style as they seek a first league win over United since 1960.
And he says the importance of the game is clear.
“Of course they [Carlisle] will be [bang up for it] – but so will we,” said Clemence, speaking to BBC Cumbria.
“We have to be. This game means a lot to our supporters.
“We’ll go into every game trying to win, and it’s no different this weekend, and we have to be bang at it.”
Barrow have made a good start to the season under new boss Clemence, winning their first two games in league and cup.
Pete Wild’s successor, like his opposite number Paul Simpson, has called for cool heads from his team in the derby atmosphere.
“In derby games – and I’ve been very fortunate to play in some big ones and coach in them – you’ve got to make sure you keep your head,” added former Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City midfielder Clemence.
“Yes, you’ve got to be bang up for it and compete, and be right up against people, but you can’t have any red cards or do anything stupid.
“Keep your discipline – that’s something I will demand of the players. You’ve also got to be calm in the atmosphere and play your own game.”
Clemence has insisted he is not reading too much into United’s own start which has brought back-to-back defeats.
“It doesn’t bother me really how they’ve done,” he said.
“I do know they’ve got some good players, they’ve got a good manager and I expect it to be a very tough game.
“Full respect for them but I think they’ll respect us as well.”
The game sees United seeking a first competitive home win since New Year’s Day, while Barrow have not won away from home since December 22.
The Bluebirds’ last league win over United came on April 9, 1960 with a 5-1 victory at Holker Street, while their most recent win at Brunton Park came earlier that season on November 21, 1959, when Barrow won 1-0.
Carlisle are unbeaten in the clubs’ last 12 league meetings, winning eight and drawing four, though Barrow did defeat the Blues in the Papa John’s Trophy at Holker Street in October 2022.
