Former Carlisle United striker Gary Madine has made a move to the National League.

The free agent frontman has joined Hartlepool United.

Madine, 33, has been handed the number nine shirt at Victoria Park as he resumes his career after recovering from an ACL injury suffered at previous club Blackpool.

Madine has not played since March 2023 but will now aim to fire Hartlepool to success in non-league's top tier.

Pools boss Darren Sarll praised Madine's "warmth and charisma" when unveiling the ex-Blues frontman.

“Gary’s career and qualities literally speak for themselves – it is the easiest description I’ll have to provide for a player," said Sarll on the Monkey Hangers' website.

"His goals, technical ability, physicality and his location made this an important acquisition.

"It further shows our ambition to push on and the backing we are getting from the owner to make these signings.”

“Gary will need a measured and intelligent introduction to match play whilst he continues to evolve physically and strengthens previous injured areas.

"Once he is fully match-prepared, he’ll provide a service that will be a real benefit to the existing group but also our ability to retain a style of play for the entire campaign.”

“Gary’s warmth and charisma has impressed me and I’m delighted he’s chosen us when he had other Football League options.

"It shows that our patience in recruitment is a virtue and that we are starting to build an environment that players want to be part of.”

Madine said he was delighted to sign for Hartlepool and added: "I’ve been out for some time now so I’m itching to get back out there. I’m really grateful for the opportunity.”

“The gaffer’s really lively and was keen to get me in – it’s nice to feel wanted. I’ve settled in easily and I can’t want to get out there and score some goals.”

Madine made his first mark on the professional game with United after progressing from the Blues' youth team.

After 22 first-team goals in 85 games he was sold to Sheffield Wednesday in 2011, returning on loan in 2014 when he notched two in five.

Madine also played on loan for Coventry City, Rochdale and Chesterfield during his time with the Blues, while he has since played for Coventry again, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Cardiff City, Sheffield United and Blackpool.
