Carlisle United have today sealed the signing of attacking midfielder Jordan Jones on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old former Wigan Athletic and Rangers man has become the Blues' 11th summer signing.

Jones arrives on a permanent deal to bolster Paul Simpson's squad three days before the transfer window closes.

United hope the Northern Ireland international winger's experience and quality will boost their side in League Two.

Simpson described his arrival as a "big addition" and told the club website: "He’s a great signing for us, he’s a really positive, attack-minded player who I’m hoping will bring some creativity, assists and add some goals to our team.

"He’s played at a high level, and had a really good career to date and I’m hoping he can continue that at Carlisle United.

"We've had to be patient with it. Like all players, he wants to play at the highest level possible. He’s had some really interesting things going on for himself, so we’ve kept in contact for probably five or six weeks.

"Thankfully over the last few days, we’ve been able to get something secured."

Jones, 29, came through the youth ranks at Middlesbrough and, after loan spells with Hartlepool United and Cambridge United, had a three -year spell at Kilmarnock and then two years with Rangers.

After a loan spell at Sunderland he joined Wigan in 2021, also spending more time on loan at St Mirren and Kilmarnock.

Simpson said Jones, who had recently been linked with Exeter City, had turned down overseas clubs and League One teams in order to join Carlisle.

He had left Wigan at the end of last season only to rejoin the Latics on a short term deal ahead of the new campaign.

He reportedly then agreed terms with Exeter but a move did not ultimately materialise.

And now Jones could make his United debut in Saturday's League Two home clash with Tranmere Rovers, the new signing reunited with his former Wigan team-mate Charlie Wyke at Brunton Park.
