Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford is at the centre of speculation over a Premier League move ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Burnley keeper, from Greysouthen, is being linked with a switch to Newcastle United before the summer window closes at 11pm on Friday.

The Magpies have been consistently linked with the England Under-21 keeper.

And national reports suggest a fresh attempt could now be made by Newcastle to bring Trafford in.

The former Carlisle United academy keeper has been on Burnley's books for the last year after making a £19m move from Manchester City.

Burnley reportedly want £30m to part with the 21-year-old, who was drafted into England's senior squad by Gareth Southgate before the European Championships.

Other reports have suggested a loan deal is a possibility for the Cumbrian, TalkSport reporting that a loan deal with an obligation to buy next summer could be on the cards.

Chelsea are also understood to have shown interest in Trafford but Newcastle appears a likelier destination at this stage.

Should he head to the north east it would mean a third goalkeeping figure at the club with Carlisle United links.

Former Blues keeper Mark Gillespie is in the Newcastle squad while ex-United keeper and coach Tony Caig is head of academy goalkeeping.

Burnley boss Scott Parker, asked about Trafford's future last week, said: "At this moment in time, he’s here. What you need to understand is that speculation is speculation. James is here and James has got the shirt, hence why he played.

“To answer your question, is he the number one, at this moment in time he is."

Another Cumbrian remaining the subject of speculation late in the transfer window is Jarrad Branthwaite.

Everton's Cumbrian England international defender has not played so far this season as he recovers from a minor groin operation.

Manchester United failed with two bids earlier this summer but remain admirers of the Wigton star.

Latest reports, meanwhile, have raised the possibility of Liverpool bidding to take 22-year-old Branthwaite from their Merseyside rivals.

A £70m deal has been the subject of speculation but there has not been a major transfer between Everton and Liverpool for 22 years, defender Abel Xavier the most recent player to cross Stanley Park back in January 2002.
