Some of the latest news and gossip from around Carlisle United’s division…

MAN UTD DEFENDER SET FOR MOVE

Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett is set to join Fleetwood Town.

A loan deal for the 20-year-old is on the cards, report the Manchester Evening News.

Bennett had a loan spell at Stockport County last season and a return to the fourth tier on a season-long deal is likely before the transfer deadline.

ROBINS EYE PREM PROSPECT

Swindon Town are said to be keen on AFC Bournemouth midfielder Gavin Kilkenny.

Football Insider say talks are under way over a move for the 24-year-old.

Robins boss Mark Kennedy, they say, hopes to be at the front of a queue of several EFL clubs for the Dubliner.

AMMIES LINKED WITH RANGERS MAN

Salford City are reportedly chasing Rangers’ Leon King.

The 20-year-old defender is said to be available for a move from Ibrox.

Another Rangers man, midfielder Alex Lowry, is reportedly the subject of interest from Carlisle United, according to the Daily Record among other sources.

BANTAMS MAN FACES D-DAY

Former Carlisle United target Jake Young faces a decision on his Bradford City future before Friday’s deadline.

The forward has been the subject of a bid from League Two, with Fleetwood believed to be the interested party this time.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if either happens – whether he stays here or he leaves,” Bantams boss Graham Alexander told the Telegraph & Argus amid other rumours of League One interest.

BARROW BOSS PROUD OF CUP HISTORY BOYS

Barrow boss Stephen Clemence has spoken of his pride after his side dumped Derby County out of the Carabao Cup to set up a glamour trip to Chelsea.

Ex-Carlisle keeper Paul Farman made the crucial save as the south Cumbrians defeated the Championship visitors on penalties.

They are in the third round for the first time since 1967/68. “I said when I went into the huddle [before the penalties] I was proud of their performance,” Clemence said. “And the result didn’t really matter to me then.

“All I asked whoever was to step up was to pick their spot, stay calm and go for it. If they missed, so what? They had the courage to step up in the first place.”

GILLS BOSS PLAYS DOWN DEALS

One club unlikely to be active on deadline day is Gillingham, according to manager Mark Bonner.

The Priestfield boss appears happy with the business already done, such as the eyecatching return of Bradley Dack to the club.

“I don’t know if we’re done but I don’t expect much to happen,” said Bonner via KentOnline.

“It’s not a busy week I don’t think, I don’t think I’ll be eating pizza at 10 o’clock at the ground, I think we’re pretty much done.”

MK SET FOR WINDFALL

MK Dons are set to benefit from Brighton & Hove Albion’s signing of Celtic’s Matt O’Riley.

The MK coffers will be boosted by a cut of the profits on the player who played for the Stadium MK club from 2021 to 2022.

Fulham are also due a percentage, reports MK Citizen.

EXILES HITMAN AIMS HIGH

Newport County can be promotion contenders this season, reckons frontman Courtney Baker-Richardson.

The Exiles, written off by many pundits and bookmakers before the campaign, have two wins from their three league games so far under new boss Nelson Jardim.

Baker-Richardson said: “We’ve got to make Rodney Parade a fortress this season because everyone has got to come here and play us.

“If we can keep playing like we can at home and carry that momentum on the road, who knows where we can finish this season?”

U'S LAND FOREST DEFENDER

Colchester United have gone into the loan market to bring in Nottingham Forest defender Aaron Donnelly.

He has joined on a season-long deal from the Premier League club.

"I just want to go out and express myself, show the fans and the gaffer what I can do and I’m really looking forward to it," the 21-year-old told the U's website.
