Dan Butterworth says certain “things behind closed doors” were why his time at Carlisle United was not a great success.

The attacker, after completing a permanent move from the Blues to Swindon Town, has reflected on his spell in Cumbria in an official club interview.

Butterworth, asked about his time with United, said: “It was alright, a good experience for myself, a great changing room up there, things like that.

“It’s probably other things behind closed doors, things like that, that’s probably why it didn’t really happen.

“But it’s a really good club, the lads are great up there and I wish them all the best.”

The nature of the “things behind closed doors” was not explored further in the interview.

Butterworth, meanwhile, said he had been made to feel wanted by Swindon boss Mark Kennedy and suggested that is something he had not had in the recent past.

“When I spoke to the manager he said he really likes me and wanted me to come down and play for him,” added the 24-year-old.

“I think that’s what I need at the minute, someone who believes in me and wants me to play for him.

“That probably hasn’t happened over the past, recently…but with the gaffer here now he’s put a lot of faith in me, the phonecall was really positive and I can’t wait to get working with him.”

Butterworth said the potential move had been in the pipeline for a while and added: “Over the last few weeks, I thought it would be the better move for me and I tried to push it over the line.”

The former United man told fans of his new club that he was a “creative, attack-minded player [who wants] to go forward all the time and make things happen as much as I can.”

He said his best position was probably at number ten, “but I can also play either off the left or right…it doesn’t matter as long as I’m on the pitch.”
