Paul Simpson has played down reports linking Carlisle United with a pre-deadline move for Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry.

The Blues boss says he is an admirer of the 21-year-old and the possibility was explored several weeks ago.

But Simpson cooled any suggestion of a deal for Lowry before the transfer deadline – saying the player wants to remain at the Scottish Premiership club.

A report by Football Insider this week said Carlisle had enquired about Lowry and “were keen” to sign him before the deadline.

Manager Simpson, though, said United’s interest was not as recent as that, and the door had since closed on a possible deal.

“We had a conversation about Alex Lowry but we're probably going back maybe about a month,” Simpson told the News & Star.

“Alex Lowry doesn't want to leave Glasgow Rangers, so it got nipped in the bud then, simple as that.

“He's a player I like, I think he's a good footballer.

“I think you have to have a certain system to fit him in, but I think he's a good footballer that could have fitted in – but he chose not to come to Carlisle United.”

Reports have suggested Lowry is available for a move from Rangers with the player having made 14 first-team appearances for the club after coming through the Gers’ youth ranks.

He spent time out on loan at Heart of Midlothian last season, while Lowry has played for Rangers B in the Scottish Challenge Cup this season.

Simpson’s comments on Lowry, when asked by the News & Star, came as he confirmed Carlisle were expecting to add a “creative” player on loan before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

The player was due at Brunton Park for a medical today with the deal set to be confirmed later should all go to plan, although the player will not be registered in time to face Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

Another potential signing, the Blues boss added, had fallen through on Thursday evening.
