THE Carlisle United Supporters' Trust (CUST) has thanked 'club legend' Paul Simpson in a statement following his departure.

Simpson left Carlisle United following the Blues' 2-1 defeat against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, August 31.

Following the exit of Simpson, CUST, which holds a 10 per cent vote in CUFC Holdings Ltd. thanked the 'club legend' for his contributions to Carlisle United both on and off the pitch.

They said: "The Carlisle United Supporters' Trust board would like to place on record our enormous gratitude to Paul Simpson for his huge contribution, both on and off the pitch, over his two periods in charge of the club.

"Paul's time with Carlisle United as a player and manager has left supporters with incredible memories and his contribution will rightfully be remembered in club legend.

"Paul twice dragged the club up off the canvas when a potential knockout blow, from which we may not have recovered, was potentially just around the corner.

"This is absolutely not the way that anybody wanted this journey to come to an end but unfortunately the decision had to be made in the best interests of the football club moving forward.

CUST also highlighted the contributions of Gavin Skelton, Billy Barr, and Jake Simpson who all also departed alongside Simpson following the Blues' third defeat in their first four League Two matches

They said: "We would also like to acknowledge and give our thanks to Gavin Skelton for his long and distinguished service.

"He spent time as academy coach, first-team coach, caretaker manager, and assistant manager under no fewer than four permanent managers.

"His club contribution should not be overlooked.

"Thanks also go to Jake Simpson and Billy Barr who have both also left the club.

"Our 1921 board director was fully involved in discussions regarding the decisions that have been made in relation to the coaching staff, which pays testament to the relationship we have with the majority owners.

"The views of our members received over the last few weeks were taken into account at the top of the club."

As attention now turns to the 'thorough recruitment process' to decide Simpson's successor, CUST detailed how it will be involved in appointing a new first team leadership team.

They said: "The strong relationship will also see our director play a role in the thorough recruitment process to find a replacement football department leadership team.

"We understand that this is a privileged position to be in and it is not a responsibility that will be undertaken lightly.

"It goes without saying that we wish Paul and the other departing staff all the very best for their respective futures."
