CARLISLE United owner and chairman Tom Piatak has discussed the 'very difficult' decision to part ways with Paul Simpson in his first words since the manager's departure.

Simpson's second spell in charge of Carlisle United came to an end after the Blues suffered their third defeat in four League Two matches against Tranmere Rovers at Brunton Park.

Omari Patrick, the man who scored the pivotal equaliser at Wembley Stadium in front of the Blues' then-prospective owners in May 2023 and took Carlisle up to the third tier, netted the two goals that ended Paul Simpson's reign.

Carlisle's subsequent statement that confirmed Simpson's departure did not describe the move as a sacking, instead saying that the manager had "left" the club.

Speaking for the first time since Simpson's exit, Tom Piatak described why he believed it was the right time to make a change.

Speaking to Carlisle United TV, he said: "It was a tough day for everybody involved.

"It's very difficult when you need to make a change but the club has to move forward, it is about the club, and as tough as it was we had the discussions and it led to the inevitable conclusion.

"I have been very supportive of Paul and I wanted to see a different result but the results were what they were, we did have some internal metrics and we were not achieving them, so it was a matter of timing.

"I think it was best for all parties that this happened as quickly as possible, we are one [win] from three and 20th on the table which is not where we should be, the talent we have on this team is better than that, but sometimes just a change a reset is necessary.

The Blues' chairman and owner also reflected on Paul Simpson's legacy and his own personal sadness at the manager's departure.

"It was a very difficult situation but it was respectful and I think it is going to take time to set in.

"It was not what either of us wanted but it was definitely a challenge and difficult but very respectful and understanding.

"I think that's what made it so difficult, he is such an icon here, he bleeds blue, he's from Carlisle and his legacy is and will be a great one."

Tom Piatak is set to speak to the media for the first time since Simpson's departure on Tuesday, September 3.
