A Carlisle Bowling Club is celebrating after being crowned champions at the Northern Counties competition finals.

The event took place in Hexham on Sunday, September 8, and saw Jacqueline Lee and Alison Hullock from Carlisle Subscription Bowling Club crowned Northern Counties Ladies Pairs champions.

This adds to a successful recent period for the local bowling club, which is based off Fusehill Street, that also included their Senior Fours team, affectionately known as 'The Wrinklies' crowned national champions at the Bowls England National Finals.

Jacqueline and Alison represented Cumbria at the regional final and faced stiff opposition as they bowled their way to glory in Northumberland, with the pair eventually claiming their crown with a 21-17 win against Yorkshire.

They said: "There clearly must be something in the water down at the club at the moment.

"Following their success in reaching last year's Ladies Pairs Cumbria County Final,  Alison Hullock and Jacqueline Lee, or the deadly duo as the team name they seem to go by now, were selected to represent the County at the Northern Counties event at Hexham.

"They progressed to the final which they subsequently won by beating Yorkshire  21 - 17 to become the inaugural Northern Counties Ladies Pairs champions.

"A fantastic achievement."

After being crowned Northern Counties Ladies Pairs champions, Jacqueline and Alison were also congratulated by Bowls England senior vice-president Sheila Storey who presented the awards at the event.
