Fleetwood Town boss Charlie Adam felt his side’s “character” was on show as they overcame Carlisle United’s comeback to win at Brunton Park.
The visitors lost a two-goal lead before striking again to claim a 3-2 victory.
Danny Mayor’s second-half winner settled the game after his and Ronan Coughlan’s early goals had been cancelled out by Charlie Wyke’s United double.
The result sent Fleetwood up to 12th in League Two as third-bottom Carlisle’s misery deepened.
Adam felt the way his team coped with United’s best spell of the game was key.
“You have to understand that you cannot dominate games for 90 minutes at this level,” said Adam, speaking to the BBC.
“When they bring pressure to us we need to understand when to play the game well, do things better.
“I thought the character and resilience to come back from the disappointment of the goals we conceded was excellent.
“It builds character within the group and club, and I thought the subs made a huge difference for us when they came on.”
Adam said the way United grew into things during the middle part of the game set his side a challenge.
But he felt Mayor was a worthy matchwinner for the visitors.
“The first parts [of the game] we were very good, we came off it a bit but we have to realise when they get a bit of possession period of the game we don’t have to panic,” said the former Rangers, Blackpool, Liverpool and Stoke City midfielder.
“We can relax, get in our shape, we have a structure we want to work to.
“Fair play to them [Carlisle], they changed shape at half-time, got amongst us, got the early [second-half] goal – but there was great character from our boys in bouncing back.
“If you wanted anyone to finish the third goal off it was Danny Mayor – he was outstanding the whole game.”
Fleetwood, like United, were relegated from League One last term but have started life in the fourth tier in more competitive shape than the Cumbrians.
“The mentality of this group is different and this club has changed [from last season]. We’re building, we’re trying to get better every day,” added Adam.
“We’re going to have hiccups but here we bounced back in the right way. It’s been a long two weeks since [our defeat at] Wimbledon but I thought the boys were very good.”
