Cumbrian keeper James Trafford has been hailed for a “brilliant” display that kept out Leeds United.
Trafford starred for Burnley at Elland Road in a 1-0 victory in the Championship.
The England Under-21 international, from Greysouthen, made a number of crucial saves and showed composed handling as Scott Parker’s side prevailed.
The Clarets boss later reserved special praise for Trafford after the 21-year-old’s impressive outing.
“He was brilliant, and that’s exactly what Traff needs,” said Parker.
“I’m very pleased for him. He needed a result and a game like he did [here].
“The boy had a tough year last year, he’d be the first to say that. Mentally and psychologically it was a tough season for him.
“We’re going to need every bit of him this yr. I thought he was brilliant.”
Trafford had been linked with Newcastle United before the transfer deadline, but remained at Turf Moor.
The former Carlisle United academy keeper, who joined Burnley from Manchester City last year, made 28 Premier League appearances in his debut top-flight season in 2023/24.
He lost his place to Arijanet Muric late in the campaign but the Kosovo keeper’s departure to Ipswich Town has seen Trafford reclaim his first-team place in the Championship.
The Cumbrian’s successful outing at Leeds came after his latest international appearance, Trafford keeping a clean sheet for England Under-21s in their 0-0 Euro qualifying draw with Northern Ireland.
Parker, speaking at a press conference after the Leeds game, added of Trafford: “The final action from him probably summed up his game in terms of a cross coming in, and him coming through bodies.
“When the team needed oxygen, some air, he comes and relieves that – he was brave and executed it really well, so I’m really pleased for him.” Burnley are fourth in the Championship after five games.
