A League Cup record shared by Carlisle United was broken on Tuesday night.

The Blues had previously held the record for being involved in the longest penalty shoot-out in the competition.

That arose from their 14-13 defeat on spot-kicks to Derby County in 2016.

But an even greater penalties marathon unfolded on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup's third round.

It saw Preston North End eventually defeat Fulham 16-15 after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The Championship club went through after a shoot-out that saw 34 penalties taken.

It proved the highest scoring shoot-out in English football history, with 31 of those penalties converted.

Carlisle's marathon at Pride Park had also come after a 1-1 first round draw between Keith Curle's Blues and Nigel Pearson's Rams.

Some 32 penalties were taken in the shoot-out, 27 of which were converted.

In terms of goals scored in a League Cup shoot-out, that evening equalled the 14-13 win for Liverpool over Middlesbrough in 2014, with 30 taken in total.

The world record for the longest penalty shootout was set earlier this year by Israel’s SC Dimona and Shimshon Tel Aviv, who needed 56 kicks to separate them during a promotion play-off semi-final, Dimona winning 23-22.

Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom said after his side's epic win over Fulham: "

“I’ve never been involved in a shoot-out like that. I’ve been told it’s the longest in the competition as well. It was a great atmosphere.

"We’ll look forward to the draw but we have to park it, we have other things to focus on now.”
