Tom Piatak says the way Mike Williamson’s MK Dons outplayed Carlisle United earlier this season “left a lasting impression” on the Blues owners.

Owner and chairman Piatak has spoken of his delight at Williamson’s arrival as the Blues’ new head coach.

The American businessman believes the 40-year-old’s ideas are aligned with those promoted by the Piataks at Brunton Park.

And he highlighted the 3-0 defeat suffered by Paul Simpson's United at Stadium MK in League Two last month as an occasion where Williamson’s qualities, and the footballing style he promotes, stood out.

“His style of play is exciting, attacking, and centred around high press and possession-based football,” said Piatak in a club interview.

“We had the opportunity to see this first-hand when we played MK Dons earlier in the season, and it left a lasting impression.

“It’s the kind of football that will inspire our players and captivate our supporters.”

Piatak added that Williamson was “the number one target on our list”.

He said he was “thrilled” to have secured the former Gateshead man.

“His energy, leadership, and footballing philosophy are exactly what we’ve been looking for to take this club to the next level,” added Piatak.

“Mike’s experience as a player across all levels of English football, combined with his recent coaching success, made this decision a simple one for the ownership group.

“His deep knowledge of the game, from grassroots to the professional level, has given him a unique perspective that we believe will greatly benefit our squad and the whole club.

“Mike is also a fantastic person with a clear vision for the future, and what stood out most was how closely his vision aligns with our own.

“The ownership group as a team could clearly see that his ambitions and match the long-term goals we have set for Carlisle United.”

Piatak also said he was “excited” to welcome Williamson’s coaching team of Chris Bell, Carl Magnay, and Ian Watson. “Together, they bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that will undoubtedly help us build a strong and competitive squad,” he added.

“They have all worked together – they trust, challenge and complement each other and as an already strong coaching team, they can all hit the ground running.”

Piatak added that Williamson was also “deeply committed…to building strong ties with our local community.”

“We look forward to this exciting new chapter under Mike’s guidance as we aim to drive Carlisle United forward,” added the businessman.

Piatak’s interview did not mention the length of deal handed to Williamson, nor the current state of play with United’s search for a new sporting director.

The Blues are understood to have been lining up MK Dons’ Liam Sweeting for the role but he has decided to remain at Stadium MK having reportedly secured a new deal.
